What is Coastal Management?

Coastal management is a relatively recent practice that emerged from the realization that coastal zones are deteriorating and experiencing a higher level of associated risks due to the implications of global climate change. This concept aims to combat the array of interconnected issues threatening both the ecological integrity and social communities that rely on the existence of stable coastal environments for their livelihoods. At the heart of this practice is the objective to protect all associated coastal dwelling beings from the devastating repercussions of flooding, erosion, and natural hazards. This is done through the application of strategic management practices that account for the necessary balance between all coastal aspects to increase the sense of security and resiliency for all.
